I started this school because I disagree with the way many English conversation schools are run.I created English Delivery in order to make English Conversation more accessible to students and more fulfilling and enjoyable for both students and teachers.
When I say I disagree with the way many other English schools are run, I speak both in terms of how the schools treat their teachers and their students.Having experienced working at an English school both as a teacher and as a manager, and having spoken to many other native English teachers over the years, I have come to feel that many schools treat their staff unfairly. In most schools, teachers are guaranteed a monthly salary, but the salary does not increase even if the number of students or classes increases. In such a situation, the teacher cannot feel special; cannot take pride in his/her work; and does not feel responsible for each class or student.A teacher in that situation will start teaching classes with the attitude of an office worker or a civil servant. Many times, I have seen or heard teachers droning through a class that they really don’t care about. That is most unfair to the student. And the responsibility for that lies mostly with the company, not the teacher.I believe that a teacher should be guaranteed a monthly salary, but should also be paid more or should receive regular bonuses if that teacher is able to get more classes or students. If a teacher’s ability is recognized, that teacher feels appreciated by the company and feels more pride in his/her work. The teacher will feel more responsibility toward each class and each student. In this situation, teachers will feel more interest in each class and each student ? they will feel, “This is MY class.”They will be more attentive in training courses and will work harder to make themselves better teachers. And, most importantly, they will be interested in each student’s progress.
Secondly, and more importantly, I disagree with the way many schools treat their students.I have seen and heard horror stories of students being subjected to pressure sales in which the student is talked into paying out hundreds of thousands of yen to buy 3 years of lessons.I don’t think it’s possible to know where we will be or what we will be doing in three years time, so I think it’s wrong to pay 3 years in advance for a SERVICE.I would never pay 3 years in advance to a barber or to the dry cleaners because my life could change at any time and I may not be able to or may not WANT to use that same barber or dry cleaner. In fact, that barber shop or dry cleaning storemay not even EXIST in 3 years.
Worse, for children’s classes, there are many schools that pressure mothers into buying “class materials” for 200,000 or 300,000 thousand yen PLUS paying monthly tuition fees to attend classes.I disagree with this very much.I studied French for 10 years, but in total, I never spent more than $400 (about \50,000) on materials.I’m studying Chinese right now.My materials cost $20 (about \2,400) for the entire course. If students need to buy materials for studying at home, I believe that the company should provide easy to use, inexpensive materials.I don’t think English education should be used as an excuse to make money on unnecessary materials.
I believe that students should feel that both the teacher and their company are their friends. In creating English Delivery, I am creating a company where teachers enjoy working and take pride in their classes and where students enjoy learning English, make progress, and don’t have to take out to loan to pay for it. |
